What is emergency lighting

An emergency lighting inspection is a check to determine whether the emergency lighting in a building is functioning properly and meets the applicable standards, such as NEN-EN 50172. The inspection focuses on aspects like the operation of fixtures, battery life, and the visibility of escape routes. A proper inspection is not only legally required but also contributes to the safety of individuals in emergency situations. This page is entirely dedicated to the emergency lighting inspection. We explain what it is and delve into the requirements and regulations.

Explanation of Emergency Lighting

Emergency lighting is essential for safety in buildings. In the event of a power failure or emergency, this lighting ensures that people can quickly and safely exit the building via illuminated escape routes. This includes escape route lighting, anti-panic lighting, and lighting near emergency exits or fire extinguishing equipment. The requirements for emergency lighting are outlined in standards such as NEN-EN 50172.

Requirements and standards for emergency lighting

In the Netherlands, there are clear regulations and requirements for emergency lighting. These are designed to ensure safety in case of power failure or emergencies. Before you can use an emergency lighting system, it must meet several standards. Curious about what they are? We’ve listed the most important requirements and guidelines for you.

Regulations

  • Emergency lighting must automatically turn on in the event of a power failure of the normal lighting.
  • Emergency lighting must provide sufficient brightness to keep escape routes, emergency exits, and hazard zones visible.
  • Emergency lighting systems must be connected to a reliable power source, such as a battery or emergency power supply.
  • The system must function for at least one hour without mains power (in some cases, three hours).
  • Pictograms for escape routes and emergency exits must be correctly placed, clearly visible, and designed according to the standard.
  • The placement of fixtures must comply with fixed distances and guidelines, for example, at staircases, intersections, and emergency doors.
  • Emergency lighting must be tested and maintained periodically; results must be recorded in a logbook.
  • The installation must be designed in such a way that it functions safely and reliably under all circumstances.

Requirements

  • Emergency lighting must provide protection against failures and outages.
  • Emergency lighting must be resistant to overload from the emergency power supply.
  • Risks of power failure and emergency lighting failure must be prevented.
  • Suitable fixtures and batteries must be used that comply with the specified standards.
  • The emergency lighting must be correctly distributed throughout the building, with attention to high-risk areas and escape routes.
  • Emergency lighting must be able to withstand the maximum load of the emergency power system.
  • Emergency lighting must be properly connected and tested to prevent short circuits.
  • The lighting must meet the requirements for the type of space (for example, a damp room requires waterproof fixtures).
  • New emergency lighting systems must be inspected before they can be put into use.
  • To ensure safety and functionality, emergency lighting must be regularly inspected and maintained.
  • A diagram of the emergency lighting must be available, including test results and maintenance history.
