NEN 3140 is the Dutch standard for the safe operation of activities involving or around electrical objects in the low-voltage range. According to the Dutch Working Conditions Act (Arbowet), employers are required to create a healthy and safe working environment for their employees. An inspection based on NEN 3140 is a means to comply with this legislation.
With NEN 3140, you perform periodic inspections, and the findings are recorded in an inspection report. This report provides your client with insight into the condition and safety of their installations.
Our ready-to-use NEN 3140 inspection form makes your work smarter and faster with automatic classifications (IB22), a voltage drop calculation tool, an integrated standard defects list, and support tables. Generate professional reports in no time.
Once you’ve completed the inspection, you can digitally sign the report immediately. With a single click, you can email the professional inspection report in your own branding, including your company logo, to both your client and yourself.

SCIOS (Systeemcertificatie Inspectie en Onderhoud van Systemen) is a Dutch certification scheme that sets standards for the inspection and maintenance of technical systems, including electrical and heating systems. It's important to note that the guidelines for SCIOS certification may differ by country.
A Scope inspection is an electrotechnical assessment certified by SCIOS. There are various types of inspections, such as Scope 8, 10, and 12, which focus on tasks like verifying the safety of electrical installations (Scope 8) or identifying fire risks (Scope 10). It is important to note that requirements for these inspections may vary depending on the country.
NEN 3140 originated from the Working Conditions Act (Arbowet). This law requires employers and employees to create an electrically safe working environment. NEN standards help ensure this electrical safety. While the NEN standard is not a law, it represents "best practices."
NEN 3140 is based on the European standard NEN-EN 5110. All relevant requirements for low voltage are included in NEN 3140.
The standard committee for low-voltage electrical installations, also known as NEC 64, is responsible for standards including NEN 3140, which pertains to the safety of electrical installations.
Upon passing your NEN 3140 exam, you will receive the NEN 3140 certificate. The NEN certificate is not (yet) registered in a national registry. However, the NEN 3140 certificate document is recognized by employers.
After obtaining your NEN personal certificate, you are required to re-take the exam within three years. During this period, NEN 3140 guidelines may have been updated, so it is advisable to re-enroll in NEN 3140 training.
Yes, the Working Conditions Act requires both employers and employees to create an electrically safe working environment. On the job, many clients increasingly demand that self-employed professionals (ZZP’ers) hold a valid NEN 3140 Certificate. The NEN 3140 guidelines help ensure this electrical safety.
