Explanation of Emergency Lighting
Emergency lighting is essential for safety in buildings. In the event of a power failure or emergency, this lighting ensures that people can quickly and safely exit the building via illuminated escape routes. This includes escape route lighting, anti-panic lighting, and lighting near emergency exits or fire extinguishing equipment. The requirements for emergency lighting are outlined in standards such as NEN-EN 50172.
Requirements and standards for emergency lighting
In the Netherlands, there are clear regulations and requirements for emergency lighting. These are designed to ensure safety in case of power failure or emergencies. Before you can use an emergency lighting system, it must meet several standards. Curious about what they are? We’ve listed the most important requirements and guidelines for you.
Regulations
- Emergency lighting must automatically turn on in the event of a power failure of the normal lighting.
- Emergency lighting must provide sufficient brightness to keep escape routes, emergency exits, and hazard zones visible.
- Emergency lighting systems must be connected to a reliable power source, such as a battery or emergency power supply.
- The system must function for at least one hour without mains power (in some cases, three hours).
- Pictograms for escape routes and emergency exits must be correctly placed, clearly visible, and designed according to the standard.
- The placement of fixtures must comply with fixed distances and guidelines, for example, at staircases, intersections, and emergency doors.
- Emergency lighting must be tested and maintained periodically; results must be recorded in a logbook.
